Can you work more than 40 hours, but less than 80 at the same location for two different employers.

I work for a hospital as an NP full time (37.5 hours) during the week. A group of doctors at the hospital wants to hire me to make rounds for them on the weekends at the hospital which is a related but different job than I do for the hospital. The hospital would rather I don't take the job because they are afraid they will be in violation of overtime laws as I will be working more than 40 hours at the hospital, but only paid for 37.5 hours of regular time by the hospital and the remainder hours will be paid for by the doctor group at a per diem rate. The doctor group has no financial connection to the hospital.
