Can work require me to come in on my weekend off?

I just received a notification from my job that I must come to a mandatory 2 hour training on either Saturday or Sunday afternoon (it is currently 8pm on Friday, I am not scheduled to work at all this weekend) or risk unpaid suspension. I cannot attend this meeting without major inconvenience to my life and again, I am not scheduled to work this weekend at all. Is this legal? If it's relevant, I'm a nonexempt employee and they will pay me for this meeting. Also I live In California. Thanks!
