Can client withhold final pay from contractor

I have a client that I have done work for for a year. Last week he learned that I was going to take on another client to work from home. He called me and stated, if you go into this meeting it will cost you your job. Who is he to say what I do in my own time? No he is withholding my final check because I got a car from him and he signed the title and bill of sale as a gift. Now he says I still owe him for the car even thought it was transferred immediately to my name with the state as a gift. Is this legal? He is also harassing me that I am posting negative reviews online about his company and I am not. He said he has retained an attorney to fight me for this pay. What do I do?
