Can an employer terminate you, then put you on admin leave for an undisclosed amount of time?

I was given a letter of termination on a Friday because I did not renew my teaching license. On Monday, I was contacted via email and told since I chose involuntary termination over resigning that I am being placed on unpaid admin leave until corporate office approves the termination, which could take a while. Is this right? Can this be done?
