Can a non-compete agreement be grandfathered as a result of an acquisition?

I signed a non-compete with my former employer. I found new employment with a company that does not compete with my former employer. My current employer, however, has been acquired by a direct competitor of my former employer. I did not seek employment with a competitor, but now find myself working for one. Is my original non-compete with my former employer enforceable?
