Can I use FMLA to help my adult daughter with the birth of her baby?

I have worked for my employer for 18 years (Virginia). I have over 12 weeks of personal sick leave accrued. I want to take 6 weeks off for the birth of my adult daughter's baby. I submitted the FMLA forms, including certification from her physician that my daughter will be incapacitated and will need my help, as sole caregiver, for "activities of daily living" such as driving and lifting. HR was very slow to respond. Eventually, the HR person pressed me on what "disabilities" or complications were involved since pregnancy is not a disability. She hinted that my request would be denied.
