Can I get my pay cut due to oversight?

I've worked for my company for about 8 years and during the first 4 I was hired on for a swing shift. During the 5th year I agreed to move to first shift fully understanding that I would lose my swing differential and I was prepared for it. About 6 months in I'm brought into a meeting and told that I had still been receiving the differential and that it would be removed. That's fine, I hadn't really noticed I was still getting it since the hours I was working on first shift didn't have as much overtime as swing shift and I attributed the somewhat lower pay to that.

Flash forward 4 years to today and I'm once again brought into a meeting. As of late we've had to ramp up production due to covid and the nature of my job so 2 shifts are being created for the department I'm currently working, with me agreeing to temporarily work swing until we're caught up. I believed I was going to once again receive a differential during the duration of the work period but instead I was told that I was still receiving the differential.

I'm totally confused at this point, more so because the current differential is listed at 15% while the differential I had agreed to back in the day was $1 per hour. I'm told that I will not receive anything during the duration of the temporary swing period and that upon my return to first shift I would once again have it taken away.

The problem is now that financially, that is a big difference from what I was earning 4 years ago and so I'm afraid this will hurt me due to my finances being planned out to my current pay. Even more so if it's actually the 15% percent they're referring to. Rather than the $1 an hour I was aware of long ago.

Question is, can they do this? Do I have any sort of say or way to protest what could be a potentially damaging financial blow? I know I should have probably been better about checking my stubs throughour the years but I haven't had to do that since I purchased my home 5 years ago and any pay balance enquiries I have I usually just refer to the quick view on the ADP app.
