Can I demand legit information that caused my demotion?

I was demoted because it was said that another employer called my current job for a reference, but I had not applied anywhere else. I asked my regional manager for information on the company, she couldn't give me a name, so I asked her to forward any info & she said the corporate said the information was too far down the caller id to obtain. I wrote a letter to corporate stating that I was innocent and that I wanted the info of the company to investigate for fraudulent activity, and the CEO calls my personal cell to tell me he didn't believe me & that there was no information. He basically said I should be happy to have my job, but I asked again for information and he couldn't provide me of any. How should I go about proving my innocence and get my compensation?
