Can I be fired for taking off thinking my fmla was approved only to find out it was not?

I was supposed to start my fmla on Oct 5 due to depression and and stress with everything going and the dr stated he would sign off on it I spoke with hr turned in the paperwork and all the required paperwork and took the time I thought had been approved while using my sick time hours available so that I could still be paid. I was contacted today informing me that my dr never submitted my paperwork and that I may be in trouble. Can I be fired for this?
