is it illegal to get fired for going on vacation?

I have been with my co. since feb 08. I started pt and since august 08 I'm ft. When I took the ft position it was for 6 months. Back in September 08 I told my direct manager that I was thinking of taking a few vacations in 09. He said it should be no problem bc I was per diem (I do however, get insurance)I booked a 2 wk trip for May 09 and they were aware, not 2 wks before my trip they tell me it wasn't approved and if i go it may be grounds for dismissal. What can I do?

FIred for Going on Vacation

In New York State, you get no special protection for taking a vacation. You can be fired while on vacation, or because you took a vacation, even a vacation that has been approved by the employer. It is all part of the employment at will docttrine: You can be fired at anytime for any reason, even for no reason at all.
