Am I required to request FMLA leave to take my wife to doctors appointment?

My employers HR manager is trying to require me to take FMLA to take my wife to prenatal doctor appointments. I have been using my vacation time to cover the time off with more than a weeks notice to my immediate supervisor (who doesnt have a issue with it). But now i have a HR manager who is trying to force me to take a intermitant leave so i dont "miss out on any benifits".
