I was laid off from my job after almost 6 months. The reason I was given was that the role was not providing what the partners had hoped and not what the company needs. The company needs to invest in digital enterprise and therefore decided to disband my role. I asked the partners during my meeting if I did anything wrong, and they all said “absolutely not, it’s not you, we just decided we don’t need the role”. Three days after I left, I saw an advertisement for the same job that I had. At the end of the year, I was reviewed and my manager said I was doing a great job. Almost a month ago, I was approached by our COO, because she said she heard that I hooked up with an employee that works for one of our clients. There is no rule in our employee manual that states that we can’t date clients. One of the managing partners was involved in a relationship with a client. Anyway, shortly after the COO approached me, I was told that my position was being eliminated . What should I do? I was given 2 months severance. Should I sign the separation agreement ?

Any employment lawyer needs to read your severance agreement before advising you regarding acceptance. We charge a flat fee for that and most of those are done remotely. No need to waste time traveling to a lawyer's office.

Regarding the dating a client that was probably ok but I generally discourage that. Because if the relationship goes south either the client will fire the vendor or vice versa. It's even worse if you date someone working for your own employer.

Associational discrimination, promissory estoppel, and breach of contract are sometimes other theories but those facts should be discussed in private with a knowledgeable employment lawyer.
