i was turned down for fmla which i have to care for her when needed

My mothers brother in law died, I took my mother to the cities to attend the funeral, since she is in a wheel care and doesn't walk much. she has kidney failure, heart problems, does not drive. I took her to the funeral i was turned down under fmla, they said taking her is not allowed, I was told it would be unexcused. can they do that? I had to transport her, if that is not helping your mother in a hard time what qualifies. we didn't go shopping, that probably would be excused. But i have to fight for every time i have taken off. which i think has only been 3 days since jan. and only 1 full day
