fired for being late

I had my last warning for being late but due to a nature disaster (there was a heavy rain and thunderstorm that the power went out) I can't help but to call my employer that morning I can't be on time and I'm 5 minutes late. And if they can put me in 3rd shift that day to adjust my time . But I still have a PTO available time to covered my late. They just told me over the phone that they can't do nothing on it and I was fired. Is it legal or illegal where in their handbooks they just told that you will be fired if you falsify your PTO time and I didn't falsify it.
