can the non compete clause stand

I worked for an agent where I had a 440 license however I was never allowed to write any business, quote anyone or bind any coverage. I was let go. Six weeks later i got hired on with another agency that is 1.5 miles from the previous employer. I was told that the non compete says 1 mile one year. If a customer from that other agent calls that office and I did not solicit these customers am I in violation. I worked only as a "receptionist" in the previous office. The previous agent has a lot of non renewals coming out and people are shopping. What am I supposed to do if clients being non renewed call this new office.
