Where do I turn for recourse?

I recently quit my position as Director of Finance and Operations of a nonprofit in Alabama after working in that capacity there for nearly 8 years. I work directly under the Executive Director (governed by a Board of Directors) and have had 4 E.D.s in the past plus one Deputy Director. I received annual performance evaluations from all (but the last) and have scored 100% on all. I have had clean financial audit reports each year, and have overseen many site visits by grantors, all with no problems in my area. Step in E.D. #4, who began to make these type of remarks immediately upon beginning employment: that he heard I " did things with the money", that he heard I had an affair with my ex-Director and that "it didn't take long for me to get him too," that I was never at work, that I was always behind, that someone told him I didn't want to work with him, and other similar things which he would discuss with me over and over. All of this is untrue. I told him that I was granted an alternate working schedule to accommodate my many disabilities a year ago that consisted of arriving 2 hours later than normal, leaving 2 hours later than normal. However, my other requests of working at home and more flexible time, along with hiring a part-time accounting assistant that was previously staffed was denied. I gave him the audited financials, suggested he speak with the grantors, showed him my time sheets which showed long work hours that were in excess of all other staff, all to discount the items he relayed, but the talk continued. I asked him to not participate in gossip and that I was offended, but he continued. He even added a couple of projects to my schedule. He began discussing me in a derogatory manner with outside parties and other staff, even discussing the items mentioned previously. I gave him and the Board a report detailing the status of my department, the financial status of the organization, and made suggestions a month after he began employment. It included the fact I was behind, was without the extra part-time staff, in additional to my normal full-time accounting assistant which had been unfilled for 5 months. The stress of the extra work filling my job and the work of the open job was tremendous. I became more sick. I discussed this with my Director. 3 months into his tenure, he wrote a letter that he presented to the Board during a Board Meeting discussing his observations thus far and detailed items that he considered sub-par work on my part. We discussed this during the Board Meeting and I stated how each item was incorrect. By this time, the overload of work, the illnesses that were getting worse because of this and the added stress, and the continual derogatory environment to which I was exposed started giving me panic attacks. For instance, I was out of work sick one day and a project was left in his hands and the Department Manager's.. He needed one item that he technically could do without and I woke to 23 missed phone calls and 3 recorded messages during a 2 hour period! There are at least 5 other very uniquely disturbing instances that occurred during this time that all gave me panic attacks. In each case, I was targeted for something BUT he was completely wrong in each case. After another month of this type of environment I was determined to find another job, but was given yet another diagnosis from a doctor who also requested I take off 3 to 6 months. My 2 week notice turned into 8 due to repeated requests of extensions from my Director. My resignation included a short letter for my personnel file, and a more detailed one that contained items concerning my health that I gave to my Director and the Board President only. I did this out of courtesy, to let them know what I was going through, to let them know I would work with them if possible during the transition, and to let them know that the workload was such that it would make anyone sick. My Director shared this personal letter with several other Board Member and used it as evidence of "what all he had to deal with." Subsequent to me leaving, he has talked to other staff, the Board and even outside people about me, and even me and my ex boss, stating that we ran the company into the ground, that what we did ought to be illegal, that I should be in jail, that I should have my license pulled, etc. The financial audit was completed before I left, it only needed to be presented to the Board at the next Board Meeting. He asked the auditors there if I did anything illegal or unethical that they could detect or that they found. They said no. Of course. It was another clean audit. I wrote to a Board Member (an attorney) after this requesting the negative remarks stop immediately. I also stated why they were incorrect. And I followed up by forwarding information I discussed with 2 other Board Members regarding the Director. This is because I had promised to give the attorney/board member this information for safekeeping the last time I saw him prior to me leaving. Also, to note, prior to this the Board valued my opinion and me as an employee tremendously prior to this. I acted as Interim Executive Director twice during the periods we were without one. I sat in on interviews for the new Director once (Director #3). Because of our positive relationship, and concern about what I was enduring and what I considered to be red flags concerning the new Director, I relayed my concern to 3 Board Members, separately, on 2 or 3 previous occasions. Now, the Board, I heard, has noted :"they can't believe it, that they trusted me so .They can't believe they were so wrong." This man has ruined my reputation. This organization has ruined my health. It has been 3 months since I left. I am still unemployed and still trying to regain my health. I am still trying to obtain short-term disability through our insurance carrier. I still have panic attacks thinking about work or returning to work. I feel I have been defamed. I feel my rights were violated by sharing my private medical information against my knowledge. I think the ADA was not adhered to/violated by not accommodating me for my disability request. A man was hired as a temporary replacement for me, who did not perform all my duties, yet was allowed to work at home and was paid a higher amount than my salary. My requests for accommodation that was previously denied could have been made, because they were given to this man. By paying this man more than I made after years of experience with this organization, and compatible previous experience, I experienced sex discrimination. The environment I was forced to endure until I resigned I now believe to be constructive termination. The trauma of all this has resulted in mental, emotional and physical scars What is my recourse?

Subsequent note: the disabilities I have to which I referred are scoliosis, degenerative disk disease, fibromyalgia, arthritis, moderate obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, diverticulitis, GERD and a long list of other minor disorders. The request for needed time off came from my neurologist who confirmed narcolepsy from head trauma (from a vehicle accident 3 years ago). The panic attacks are a new fun thing to add to the list.
