What to do if the offer for a job was withdrawn after you resigned from existing job?

I got a job offer and I accepted the offer and they had given me a start date. After that I gave my resignation letter to my existing job and after the last day of work at my current office, the new company GM calls me and tells me that they are withdrawiing the offer because they lost a major client. Now I am jobless!! Is there anything I can do to fight against this? I know I cannot make them hire me, but I am asking them to atleast pay me 2 or 3 months salary. When I told this to the GM , he said he vil let me know what he can do, but after that he never picks up the phone. I need to pay my mortgage and all other bills. I have a family to support. What can I do to make them pay.
