Vacation time & demotion

When I hit my year my at my job, I earned 1 week of vacation time. Over the past few weeks, I had to miss work on a couple occasions because of illness. Due to the missed hours, my employer decided to demote me to part time. So what happens to my vacation time since it was already earned? My understanding was that vacation time earned is the same as wages earned. Do they not have to pay me for my vacation time, or at the least, let me use the days?
