Vacation payout when laid off.

I have 8 days of vacation time that I had in contract when hired on. This was not earned vacation but part of my hiring package. Upon lay off I had 5 days remaining and was paid for one day because it was prorated for the first six months. Our company handbook has no rule or does not mention anything of prorating any vacation upon leaving. I could understand earned vacation but not vacation part of my contract.
