Texas non-compete contract

I started work 2 days ago. Today, day (3) the Dr. presented a non-compete contract. I work in the mental health field in a specialized area, program development and management. I have this experience prior to this position.
Can this contract be valid if it is so specific as to type of duties (including type of industries), time limit and 25 mile radius? I am very uncomfortable with this but I'm unemployed and on unemployment. To turn down work poses a problem.

Non-Compete

While I appreciate the pickle you are in, you should still be careful about what you sign because it might turn around and bite you in the future. Historically, Texas courts have not viewed non-compete agreements with favor. That, however, is changing as the judges are more and more conservative and pro-business. Whether that document could be used against you in the future is not a question that can be answered without knowledge of the circumstances and a review of the language in the agreement itself. It would be worth your while to make an appointment and have a lawyer familiar with employment law review it with you. Agreements of this nature are very serious business.
