Severance package bait & switch

The verbal severance package described during the recorded restructuring meeting did not include a detail which WAS included in the written package. If the company offers another position, I have 24hrs to accept this position. If I don't accept or withdraw myself from consideration, the severance package is void. Is this legal? Can they really dangle a carrot? And, if the proposed position is horrid hours/pay, I MUST accept or forfeit the severance?! That doesn't seem morally right, but what about legally right?
