Paying back retention bonus

I signed up for the retention bonus to stay for two years. Part of my contract also required me to give advance notification for changing my employment status. I turned in my resignation in May, stating clearly that I would stay to meet the condition for the retention bonus, which ends in December. The company decided to let me go immediately and now they asked for the retention bonus back. On the termination letter the company did not state any cause. Do I have to pay it back?
