My employer is demoting me from a salaried position to an hourly position. But they are taking my position away to create a new similar position and didn't offer or gave me a chance to apply for the new position here in California. Is this a type of wrong

I work for a nationwide company in Oakland, CA. My employer has notified to me that my position will be gone by the beginning of next year (2016). They are telling me that I will be demoted from being paid on a salary rate to a hourly rate yet again. They will be replacing my position with a new similar position but haven't even offered me to try and apply to that new position. I feel like I am being wrongfully demoted with out opportunity to gain a new position.
