Is Staffing Agency liable since I quit my job after I accepted theirs and then that job disappeared.

Accepted a job for more pay, better hours and possible temp to hire through a staffing agency that was hiring alot of people for a client. Spoke with client, and was offered a job. Was approved and told that I started on a specific date (have email) and put notice in. Monday before I start new job, agency tells me it's been put on hold and then proceeds to tell me this for the next 3 weeks. Apparently client gave the order to hire more people to a different agency at a dollar less than I was supposed to be making. Can staffing agency be held liable for this since I quit my job and now cannot get unemployment and I don't have another job (and they aren't returning my emails now either).
