I was moved from unlimited vacation to accrued vacation hours and wasn't told for 7 months

Shortly after I started at this company I started earning vacation hours. After a couple years the company made a change to unlimited vacation. After another year(just recently) they decided to change back to vacation hours. However, they changed it back to hours at Jan 1 and did not tell anybody about it (I only just found out about it from my supervisor 7 months after the fact and he only just recently found out). Anyway, this is very unsettling that they can just change these things (which I find benefits a very important part of my package and add up to the total value of the position). Is there anything I can do about this? Can they get away with making this change without telling anybody? Can they take me from unlimited to zero without notice? (actually it is -27 hrs at this point since it is 7 months down the line)
