I need to know if a situation is slander or defamation

My boss knows about a health issue my wife is having that required the stopping of any alcoholic beverages. In support I also stopped drinking, nobody is an alcoholic and that is not what caused the issue but it non the less had to be stopped. I confided to my boss about this and asked many times that it not be repeated. At a national conference I took my wife so decided not to join a group for dinner. This irritated my boss and she was verbal about how she misses me drinking with her. At the dinner table it was asked where I was and my boss told the table that my wife and I stopped drinking and that it was very hard for me to be around alcohol and also that the reason I didn't attend her wedding reception was because I struggled being around alcohol. Not true at all but what she did was insinuate to a table of my colleges and counterparts in other states is that I and my wife have a drinking problem. She also divulged that my wife has a health issue. Do I have any recourse? Would this be considered slander or defamation. Any advice on this would be very much appreciated. Thank you. Lisa
