How hard should I fight my non compete clause

I am an Optometrist that signed a non compete clause with my company in 1996. It stated that I was prohibited from working within 10 miles for a year and a half from any of our company locations. We then had 6, we now have 19 within a 50 mile radius. I have worked at the same location for 10 years. I would like to leave and open my own practice and am not sure if I should try to fight some of the language in the non compete or at least try to negotiate to minimize it or just deal with it. Not sure what is reasonable in this case.
