How does unemployment compensation and severance payments work?

I will be receiving a 6 month severance package to be paid out every two weeks (company relocated and I did not). Do I need to file for unemployment starting that first week I am unemployed but collecting severance, or do I have to wait until my severance is paid out? What happens if I wait until after the entire severance is paid out to start looking for a job (if I decide to take the time off)? Will I still be eligible for the maximum number of weeks of unemployment (and if so, how many weeks is that) starting then?
