Exemption Status at Risk

If an employer instructs an exempt employee to take five days off without pay as a company cost savings initiative, then fails to instruct the employee's to leave their Blackberry's and laptop's at the office during this time off, and continues to make task requests during this unpaid time-off, has the exemption status been put at risk?
