Details of a non compete

I have signed a non compete when I sold my business and went to work for the buyer. We are having a wage dispute and I will probably retire. I understand the basic non compete, but If I give advice to a competitor (one of my installers that went out on his own) and don't collect any money, would I be in violation? The buyer is still under contract to me for payments from the sale of the business.
