Contract breach

I signed employment contract for initial training peroid and 1 year on assignment at the client site for my Pennsylvania based employer. I was on bench(without assignment on less salaries for 3.5 months). Then, I got a client assignment which lasted for 6 months. After finishing my assignment I was on bench again for 18 days. During this bench period I got a nice offer and I quit this employer. This happened 1.5 years ago. Now, this employer is asking me pay $22000 and making false allegations that I quit them while I was client assignment. Pls. advise me what should I do?

It depends on what the contract says

I cannot advise you based on an e-mail inquiry. On this site, we merely answer general questions with general answers. Your query requires something more specific.

If your employer is claiming a breach of contract, then we need to start with what the contract says. I hope you have a copy of it.

Next, we need to know what the employer is saying now about how you breached the contract.

Note that you have up to 6 years to bring a lawsuit for breach of contract, so that the 1.5 year hiatus is really no issue at all.
