Can't wait or should I

Please I need some help. About a year and a half ago I was working for a small company in Southern California. The company was sold in April of 2008. Upon leaving I received my last paycheck but none of the vacation time that I had accrued over the year. After may attempts at contacting the owners. I went to the State of California Labor Commission and they issued a judgment in my favor for the amount plus penitently. The State said they would try to recoup the money but didn't have a time table. I have had one email exchange with the former owner and he claims that there is no money yet they have not claimed bankruptcy. Can I hold the former owner responsible for this money?

My question is should I get a lawyer will I have to pay for this out of pocket? Should I have the state handle this? As long as I get the judgment amount If a lawyer could take above an beyond that.
