Can the employer sue?

Can an employer sue an employee for loss of business due to an employees negligence?

The employee was not being supervised at the time, despite the employee being new / a trainee.

The employee was at-will, there was no written contract.

There is however an apology letter from the employee for any mistakes made, this proves that the employee was at the business at the time. Can this be used as any form of proof?

Would a case like this be dismissed or does it hold a chance ?
