Can an employer withhold severance when a release agreement was signed?

I was recently "laid off" from a company due to downsizing. I worked for the company for over 10 years and had a good relationship (so I thought) with them. When I was laid off, I was offered a severance package. I was told I would recieve my severance at the time I recieved my last pay check. I did not. The company is saying that they found a few invoices that "were in my possesion from 2 years ago" that were not paid in full. They will not release my severance until an agreement is made on how the invoices will be taken care of. According to my release agreement-neither party can sue, or seek damages against one another. Can the company withhold my severance for items that were found after I was laid off? Can I be held liable for these items if a release agreement was signed? Also, how long can the company withhold signing a release on my 401K funds? I am a single parent without a job and was counting on my severance pay to hold me until I found another job. ANY information will be helpful. Thank you so much
