Can an employer require an employee to pay for a mistake ordering custom furniture?

An order for some furniture was placed. The wrong material was specified on order, and when the furniture came in, the customer rejected order.
Employer wants to make employee pay for the furniture because it cannot be sent back to manufacturer.
The employer placed the order based on the information the employee provided.
