Can an employer enforce a Non-Compete if they lost a customer contract?

I've been working for this company for 9 years now, 2 years after starting I was told I had to sign a non-compete or be fired, now the site I have been working at for the last couple of years has decided to go with a different company due to issues with mine, the job I do involves no special training or knowledge of trade secrets (guard), the new company has expressed interest in hiring several of us to stay on site and my company is enforcing our non-compete clause to keep us from staying on site, my question is how can they enforce this if they are the ones that cost the company its contract?
