Can an employee have more than one active FMLA at one time?

Years ago at a company I worked for our corporate labor law attorney said that an employee can have only ONE active FMLA at a time. For example: if she had one for herself, then that one had to be exhausted or expired and if she had remaining FMLA time for the year she could start another one for her child. But she could not have one on herself AND her child at the same time. Now I'm understanding she can have one on both of them as long as she does not exceed the allowed 12 weeks in total. Which is correct?
