Can an employee be demoted because they can no longer perform 100% of a job due to a disability.

We have an employee who only has use of one eye. When he was promoted to a teamleader and given a forklift license this information was known. Due to a small incident involving another lift truck, it has been recommended that he no longer be allowed on a lift truck which is approx. 30% of his job, and demote him due to this also. Normal process is to not remmove an employee from driving a forklift for their first offense. Why would my company think this instance would be any different and legal?
