Can a background check hold me accountable.

I was recently hired on at a company I previously worked for as a seasonal worker and wanted to go back this season. Well they conducted a background check and stated I was convicted of a misdemeanor that I was pulled over driving without insurance. I plead guilty and had to pay a fine. Is driving without insurance considered a Misdemeanor or is it considered just traffic? They said I had to fight it before they would hire me on with the company. On my police report I do not see where this is considered a misdemeanor conviction. Can you please help me understand?
