Can I sue if I got laid-off whithout notification of any kind while on maternity leave?

I was laid-off while on maternity (mid January) but was never notified by my boss by letter, email, nor phone call. I was told by an employee that they weren't bringing me back. I was notified of this news the week I was suppose to go back to work. This being a recession, I had NO time to find a job. I have been unemployed since. I didn't even get maternity leave pay from the company. I am now in financial stress because of this. Am I able to sue the company for the way they went about things?
