Can I still work for an existing client if I leave my present employer?

I sold an Indiana company over ten years ago in which I had a non compete if I left the new company within a two year period of the sale. This has since expired. I am now an employee in the same company without a non-compete or an employment agreement. I have worked as a project manager with the same client for many years, even before the sale. My question is, If I l leave my current employer can I accept work from my client even if there is not a non-compete in place? I have indicated to my client that I am probably going to leave and they want to continue the relationship with me.
