Can I do work for a former employers customer?

I am in Ohio and have started a Electronic Security Company. I have a non compete with a former employer. One of their customers contacted me and said they are no longer using my former company for electronic locks and would like to contract me. My former company did not have a contract for the locks as it was on a per job basis. However they do have a contract for the fire alarm. I have no intention of going after those services while my non compete is valid. Am I still able to do work for them on the locks? Thank you very much.

The answer depends first, on the language in your non-compete. Does it say you may not provide any service for your former employer's customers? If so, then you will need a court's help to limit the restriction to those services that compete with the former employer's services.
