Can Human Resources charge me for their error?

I just found out last month that I am being charged for critical illness and accident insurance I didn't know that I had. HR just made the change and deductions on my last paycheck. They now are making these deductions and said that they didn't take it out previously so the company has been paying for it and now I have to pay them back. I didn't know I even had this coverage that apparently I was signed up for when I started here 2.5 years ago. I called and had the services cancelled but HR still says I have to pay them back and is taking it out of my paycheck. Is this legal? Don't they have to consider it their loss?
