Bonus payment question

My employer has a bonus program that it pays out at the end of every year to reward employees for hard work during the previous year. My employer processed my bonus and it was posted on our payroll site, I have retained proof if needed. I then resigned before being presented with the check. My employer is no refusing to give me my bonus. Is this within their rights or do they owe me the bonus since it was issued to me for previous years work. If it is still owed to me what process do I need to follow in order to obtain the payment. Thank you for your time in letting me know how to proceed
