when a "key" employee is on intermittent FMLA leave, can his/her position be replaced while on leave

the question is to the exception for key employees. When can the key employee be replaced? during an intermittent leave while he/she is still working, albiet in an intermittent leave capacity? must it be after? what notice must be provided?
