should this job be Exempt or Non-Exempt?

My title is "Field Engineer" my duties are: installing, repairing, upgrading, maintaining, and trouble shooting point of sale computer systems. I supervise no one. I am required but compensated for using my personal vehicle for hauling replacement parts and responding to service calls. I must box and ship all bad parts back for repair. I am on call 7 days per week from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm with no scheduled days off. I carry a two way pager and must respond within 30 minutes to avoid a call from my supervisor, plus call dispatch every hour if I'm in a no service area. I'm considered Exempt from overtime and paid a salary of 26,000 per year.

Exempt/nonexempt

I handled a case very similar to your facts except the employee worked in a plant full time. Nothing is absolute but it is highly probable that the court would find your employer is required to pay you overtime. As someone who repairs systems, rather than designs software, you do not appear to be in an exempt position.
