Would I be breaking my non compete if I went to work for the state?

I signed a non compete for my job not knowing what one was. I do in home care for elderly. My clients are state clients, meaning the state pays my company for me to take care of them. What I would like to do is "cut out the middle man" so to speak and go work for the state directly with my clients. Since my clients are already state clients would I be breaking the non compete I signed? Thank you.
