Would I be able to file a suit against the company for breach of contract?

In my severance agreement it was stated that my former employer would not speak ill of me to any party. I have a friend that still works for the company and it appears they have discussed the reasons for me being let go. The friend, which was not informed by me, told me I should have filed a discrimination suit, when he knew certain personal information that I had not directly informed him. It seems now, I am a topic of discussion from time to time, and it appears that when new employers call for reference they receive negative feedback from the employer. Should this be the case, would I be able to file a suit against the company for breach of contract?
