Should I pursue appealing denial of unemployment compensation due to lump sum severance pay?

I received a year's wages in one lump sum in a severance pkg upon leaving my job due to office closure. I filed for unemployment benefits (TN) but was denied due to severance pay. They informed me of this after my filing claims/looking for a job for 8 weeks. I did not receive any benefits during this time. Should I appeal; or are they right in denying me because of my severance pay? And is this something I need a lawyer for? I have until 1/7/17 to appeal.
