Purposely misclassified as independent contractor and then constructive termination?!

I think I was purposefully misclassified as an independent contractor. I had a verbal agreement to work 40 hours a week. The business was doing so poorly that they could barely offer me 8 hours a week. In addition to this, the work conditions were deplorable and seem to meet this criteria of constructive termination: " the conditions giving rise to the resignation were sufficiently extraordinary and egregious to overcome the normal motivation of a competent and reasonable employee to remain on the job."
It is a very complex issue as I understand that independent contractors are not protected the same way as employees. Also I received no prior notification and walked in to having no hours.
Where do I start?!?!
